The main principle of radiation oncology systems is to control tumor growth by zeroing in high energy radiation on it while sparing the surrounding vital organs. High dose of high energy radiation kills tumor cells and prevents them from proliferating. Since tumor cells divide more rapidly than healthy cells, radiotherapy can treat a number of tumor types. Even if some surrounding healthy tissues get affected by radiation, they can easily recover because of the recovery mechanism they possess, unlike tumor cells. Truebeam STX device combines many treatment platforms on the same device.

Which treatment techniques are applicable with Truebeam?

Many advanced treatment techniques are applicable through the TrueBeam and TrueBeam STx systems which can easily deliver different levels of radiation to any region of body. Real-time tumor movement monitoring provides synchronization of radiation dose delivery with the relevant position of moving organs such as the pancreas, lungs, prostate and breasts.

TrueBeam emits the planned radiation dose at the planned angles by revolving around patient. Imaging, the unique RapidArc technology, and real-time tumor monitoring are integrated in the system and adjustable radiation is emitted at the target with high precision. Furthermore, the therapist constantly receives information on the treatment area through the monitoring and imaging systems throughout the treatment procedure.

Characteristics of the system

  • Treatment times are reduced up to 50%. Thanks to Flattening Filter Free (FFF) specialty dose speed is 4 times increased at high energies when compared to classical approaches and 2 times at low energies; therefore patient is treated in a shorter period of time. Treatment time is reduced to 2-4 minutes in total.
  • TrueBeam is a fully digitized device of “smart” automation, positioning, imaging and treatment features.
  • Thanks to its Gated RapidArc feature, it emits radiation synchronized with patient’s breathing to compensate for tumor motion.
  • TrueBeam emits millimeter precise radiation on tumor, while sparing the surrounding tissues with the same precision. This accuracy is provided by the new synchronization level of imaging technologies, positioning, movement sinchronization, irradiation shaping, and dose delivery while precision control is exercised every 10 milliseconds throughout treatment.
  • It is one of the few devices which integrate many treatment techniques on a single platform.

Which diseases are treatable?

TrueBeam treats all types of cancer susceptible to radiation treatment. However, it is especially suitable for treatment of challenging cases and otherwise inoperable tumors or metastases.

What are the steps of the treatment?

Mask or vacuum bed is provided for patient depending on the location of treatment zone. This insures the fixed position of patient and prevents body movement throughout the treatment. Once patient’s position is fixed, thin BT cross-sections are taken and transferred to the planning system. By fusing PET, MR, angiography imaging as well as other images taken prior to treatment, the beam is aimed at various angles at the tumor so as to spare the surrounding healthy tissues. Then, optimal treatment plan is designed by means of the software on the planning system. The plan is approved by both a physicist and a doctor and patient is treated accordingly.

What does patient feel during process?

Patient is awake during treatment but asked to remain stationary in the position specified. Sometimes fixing devices are used on the treatment zones in order to minimize patient’s movements.

When can patients go back to their daily routine?

This treatment does not affect patients’ daily routine since it is an ambulatory treatment method. Patients can go back to their daily routine after receiving their daily session on the date and time specified.

What are the benefits for patient?

  • This is a non-invasive treatment method which requires no invasive intervention for fixing the position of patients.
  • TrueBeam is a system of high precision. It is designed to facilitate patient tailored radiation treatment accounting for tumor location, movement and changes in tumor size. The system features an option for synchronizing radiation delivery with respiration thus achieving target accuracy.
  • TrueBeam stands for faster treatment when compared to other SRS and SBRT methods. One session lasts approximately 15-20 minutes.
  • Fractioned treatment is applied. The dose of treatment can be delivered in single or multiple fractions as specified by doctor.
