This field includes mental health services that are provided to children starting in the mother's womb and continuing through infancy, nursing, pre-school, school and adolescent years. It may not be true to allege that a certain period is more important than others in mental health services; it might be the case that a period which is more difficult for some children and families is not so for other children and families. However, in general, psychological problems tend to increase with the start of formal education when social expectations and requirements increase. Such an increase may be observed at each stage of the education periods.
Which diseases are observed most in child and adolescent psychiatry?
Child and adolescent psychiatry has been a field of medicine which families and educators consulted to seek help, particularly starting from 90s in our country. In particular, consultation for the problems of handicapped children tends to be higher. Handicapped children are followed by children who experience problems in school life and who are not able to exhibit the expected academic/social performance.
What path should be followed for treatment in child and adolescent psychiatry?
A treatment that does not involve the family is not possible. The child will benefit from a treatment in which the family is cooperatively involved. Families should be careful to follow the recommendations and not to miss sessions when follow-up is necessary.
In Child and Adolescent Psychiatry...
Intrauterine evaluations, and information and guidance of the family and the mother
Developmental problems of babyhood (sleep disorder, eating problems)
Development problems (mental, emotional, cognitive development problems and associated diseases: Mental deficiency, general developmental disorders)
