The coronavirus pandemic is having an impact on Turkey just like the entire world, and personal hygiene and social isolation are gaining more importance every single day. This can cause high levels of stress and anxiety and have a negative impact on the immune system, says Anadolu Medical Center’s Psychologist Ezgi Dokuzlu: “Prolonged social isolation which differs drastically from our usual daily routines as well as repeating hygiene practices continuously may cause certain psychological problems. In order to minimize negative effects of social isolation, there are simple but effective steps,” says Dokuzlu. Here are her suggestions:
Accept the situation
Do not neglect the importance and necessity of staying home in our collective fight against the virus. Remember that this too will end after a while and that you need to assume your own responsibility. Accept the situation you are in. Waiting for the situation to get better may increase your anxiety levels. Instead, accept the current situation and focus on what you need to do right now.
Socialize albeit from a distance
During social isolation it is essential that you maintain communication with others. You can socialize by having phone or video calls with your loved ones and friends. While under lockdown with family members make sure that you engage in shared activities. Try and have meals together or start a conversation about a certain topic, watch TV series and play games together.
Get regular sleep and eat healthy
Anxiety and restlessness may cause sleep irregularities and loss of appetite. Announcement of case numbers at late hours may trigger anxiety before sleep. This may cause difficulty in falling asleep and restlessness. Try and follow the news during the day.
For a strong immune system, regular sleep and a healthy diet are essential. Make sure you go to bed and eat a healthy diet at the same time everyday
Make time for yourself
What you do for yourself in these psychologically difficult times matters. Fulfilling a long-postponed task, seeing a film you haven’t had the time to watch, trying a new recipe or a new hobby might be some of the best gifts you can give yourself to cheer yourself up.
