Coronavirus threatens the entire world, measures taken at Istanbul Airport
The virus shows symptoms in two days
As the death toll of the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV), which originated in China’s Wuhan reaches 26, the entire world is following the news of the virus with great concern. The virus causes fever, coughs and respiratory distress, said Anadolu Medical Center Infectious Diseases Specialist Assoc. Prof. Elif Hakko: “The symptoms usually emerge two days upon encounter with the virus, but this could take up to 14 days”
Reported for the first time to the World Health Organization on 31 December 2019 from China’s Wuhan following pneumonia cases and identified as a new coronavirus on 7 January, casualties due to 2019-nCoV are on the rise. Coronaviruses that are transmitted from camels, goats, cats and bats to humans previously caused SARS and MERS and rarely made humans sick, explained Anadolu Medical Center Infectious Diseases Specialist Assoc. Prof. Elif Hakko: “The 2019-n-Cov that originated in Wuhan is thought to have been transmitted to humans in the seafood market, within which there’s a section where wild animals are sold. Human to human transmission has also been confirmed because of the fact that some of the cases did not have any animal contact.”
Symptoms take 2 to 14 days to emerge
Assoc. Prof. Hakko has indicated that countries must be prepared in terms of precautions: “The virus causes fever, coughing and respiratory distress. Upon contracting the virus it usually takes 2 days for the symptoms to emerge. However this could take up to 14 days.”
Precautions include cooking meat and eggs thoroughly
Assoc. Prof. Elif Hakko has also said that the virus does not have a specific treatment or vaccine. In case of need, supportive treatment is offered to the patients. “Just like in other infectious diseases, frequent hand washing, closing the mouth and the nose while coughing and sneezing, staying at home while ill and not going out are very important in terms of protection from the infection. Cooking meat and eggs thoroughly is also among the recommendations.”
